Environment and the WHO Expert Group on Pesticide Residues, which met
in Rome, 27 November - 6 December, 1978, together with the
recommendations made. A Report of the 1978 Joint Meeting, which
outlines the principles on which the evaluations were carried out and
summaries the recommendations made, has also been published.*

INTRODUCTION
The report of the Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on
Pesticide Residues and the Environment and the WHO Expert Group on
Pesticide Residues held in Rome from 27 November to 6 December 1978
provides information on the general principles followed and the
considerations of the meeting. It also contains a summary of the
evaluations made on residues in foods of the various pesticides
considered at the session. The present document contains summaries of
the data considered at the session. The present document contains
summaries of the data considered by the Meeting together with the
recommendations made.
As much relevant information as possible has been included in the
monographs. This has been obtained from the published literature
wherever possible, but other sources of information have also been
used. Early and complete publications of the results of research in
this field are very important, particularly of these parts which can
form the basis for estimation of acceptable daily intakes and
appropriate residue levels. Publication allows the research to be
scrutinized and criticized by scientists from disciplines not
necessarily represented at the meeting. Data contained in unpublished
reports is less satisfactory and, when considered, must be complete
and nonconfidential and indicate authorship.
Some of the compounds considered at this meeting have been
previously evaluated and reports on in earlier publications. If only a
limited amount of additional information of these compounds has become
available at this meeting, only this latter information is summarized
in the pertinent monograph, and reference is made to the previously
published evaluation, which should also be consulted by the reader who
wishes to obtain a more complete evaluation of the compound. Such
monograph addenda are indicated by an asterisk in the "Contents"
sheet.
Annex 1 to this volume of monographs gives a summary of the
recommendations concerning acceptable daily intakes, residue limits
and guideline levels made at the 1978 Meeting. It has already appeared
as an Annex to the Report of the Meeting.
