PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN FOOD - 1979

Sponsored jointly by FAO and WHO

    EVALUATIONS 1979

    Joint meeting of the
FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues
    in Food and the Environment
    and the
WHO Expert Group on Pesticide Residues
    Geneva, 3-12 December 1979

    FENTHION

    Toxicology

Although fenthion is scheduled for evaluation at the 1980 meeting,
information was available on the influence of fenthion on the eyes, as
indicators of effects on the central nervous system. Four days after
injection of this compound at dose levels of less than 0.5 mg/kg bw,
the main changes in the electroretinography (ERG) were a shortening in
the latency time of the alpha wave, a shortening in the peak times of
the alpha and beta waves, and an increase in the amplitude of the
waves. The dose effecting minimum changes in the ERG was 0.005 mg/kg
bw (Iami, II, Toxicity of organophosphorus pesticides - fenthion - on
the retina. Electroretinographic and biochemical study in Japanese.
Nippon Ganka Gakkai Zasshi (J. Jpn. Ophthalmol. Soc.), 78 (4): 1-10,
    1974).
