Chem. Abstr. Name: Tannic Acid
5. Summary of Data Reported and Evaluation
5.1 Animal carcinogenicity data
Tannic acid is carcinogenic in rats following its subcutaneous
injection; it produced liver tumours. In mice, subcutaneous injection
of hydrolysable tannins produced liver tumours, and that of condensed
tannins produced both local sarcomas and liver tumours. No adequate
published studies involving oral administration of tannins were
available to the Working Group.
5.2 Human carcinogenicity data
No case reports or epidemiological studies were available to the
Working Group.
Subsequent evaluation: Suppl. 7 (1987) (p. 72: Group 3)
For definition of Groups, see Preamble Evaluation.
