PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN FOOD - 1980
Sponsored jointly by FAO and WHO
EVALUATIONS 1980
Joint meeting of the
FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues
in Food and the Environment
and the
WHO Expert Group on Pesticide Residues
Rome, 6-15 October 1980
DDT
Explanation
Pursuant to the JMPR 1979, the Meeting was provided with data on a
carcinogenicity study with DDT and metabolites.
Although the agricultural use of DDT has now been restricted in
many countries, residues of this pesticide and its metabolites can
be found in various food commodities, as well as in human milk and
in human tissues, in quantities frequently exceeding the
conditional ADI set by the 1969 Meeting.
Pertinent information, which became available in recent years,
suggests that a reevaluation of the risk to human health from DDT
and its metabolites should be carried out.
FURTHER WORK OR INFORMATION
The Meeting recommends that, as a first step there should be a
thorough review of all accessible information with the aim of
presenting comprehensive working papers for consideration by future
Joint Meetings.
